Bean Drinking began life in late 2004 as an espresso bar.

We had partnered with a local coffee roaster, and we were focused on serving the best coffee we could. The response was fantastic, and we gained an instant following. It seemed the people of Crows Nest were crying out for great coffee made with a passion. We were 'discovered' by the local newspapers. Articles were written, we were nominated for small business awards which we were fortunate to win two years running. The following for our coffee grew.

Over the next five years, the business continued to evolve. Each year saw new challenges, and our involvement in the wider coffee industry increased. The more we personally became involved in Specialty Coffee and explored alternative brewing methods such as Syphon, Pour Over and Cold Drip, the more it became apparent that this was something we wanted to incorporate into the Espresso Bar so our customers could share that journey.

The start of 2010 was an exciting and busy time for us as a business. Max arrived (our 5kg Batch Roaster), the SLAYER landed and the collection of equipment for the Coffee Lab was slowly being acquired. Night after night was spent refitting the shop using reclaimed dockyard timber and other materials. We salvaged the front bench ceiling lights from a factory in the process of being demolished, and refashioned numerous empty coffee sacks from all of our test roasting into into artwork, wall coverings and a tabletop.

We never once shut the door during the refit, instead choosing to be there every day to serve our customers the brew they craved. It was a running joke amongst the 'regulars' and staff that it was like they came into a different coffee shop every day.

Things have settled down since then, and the benefit of all the hard work we put into getting it right in the early years has been realised in the business today. Focused on environmentally friendly & sustainable coffee, we work in three business areas:

  supplying cafes and restaurants with our roasted coffee, organic teas, panela and drinking xocolat.

  supplying coffee and brewing equipment to coffee enthusiasts Australia wide

We have been truly fortunate to gain some high praise for our passion, sourcing, roasting, sustainable business practices and commitment to the environment. While it is nice to be recognised by the media and industry peers, its great just to see the difference our coffee makes to those who visit our little corner of Crows Nest each morning.
